This week we have been celebrating Diwali and the triumph of light over dark and good over evil. This has been a theme in our independent learning time, where the children have independently written Diwali poems, drawn huge Rangoli patterns using chalk outside in the quad, and followed instructions to make coconut barfi.
In maths this week we have been solving words problems using resources, and learning that when we add 2 numbers together, instead of counting from 0, it is much easier to start with the greatest number and count on. We practised this using a number line, finding the greatest number, then ‘jumping’ along the number line to add the other number and find our answer.
In English we began our next literacy unit using the book ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. So far we have written our predictions about the story using some clues left in our classroom. We wrote about what we could see and hear at the seaside, and about what each of the characters met so far might be thinking. On Friday we each wrote an animal fact file about our favourite animals, we had hedgehogs, penguins, lemurs, cheetahs and many more. We wrote about what they look like, eat, like to do, and where they live.
This week we have been spotting character strengths in others. By putting on our special goggles we spotted our friends using bravery, kindness and resilience. We discovered that we all have our own character strengths.
The week ended with a fabulous Diwali dance workshop with Andy. We learned some Indian dancing and acted out the story of Rama and Sita using dance. In the afternoon we held a Diwali light parade and gathered (socially-distanced) in the playground with the other school bubbles to celebrate in our bright clothes.
We even had time to make some paper chains in Mouse Mania, ready to put up some Christmas decorations next week. It’s never too early….
Have another amazing weekend, Team 1. You have earned it!
