This week was our WW1 Commemoration Week.
We began with an assembly with Mr Thomas to introduce the topic and give some background about WW1. We then watched and read about the Christmas Truce, before analysing Carol Ann Duffy's poem about the truce. After learning some more about how horrific life in the trenches was, we used our ideas from to write our own free verse poems about the Christmas Truce, focusing on description, similes, powerful verbs and adverbs. A few of us managed some alliteration and even some personification!
We also learned about the different countries involved in the war, and which sides they were on. We located where the the Battle of Jutland took place and played a game of battleships to practise our Maths gridwork skills. We also produced some wonderful artwork using a sunset background and a silhouette of sodiers on the batlefield.
We were incredibly lucky to have several visitors in over the course of the week. Alison from Norton Priory talked to use about the war and some local people who were awarded gallantry medals for their contributions during the war. We were also visited by the Cheshire Home Guard, who dressed up in period costumes and brought in some incredible artifacts for us to handle and discuss. We loved meeting their rescue dog, too!
Finally, we were visited by a drama workshop company who helped us learn about the causes behind the war, different jobs to do in the trenches, and consider how the soldiers would have felt during the Christmas Truce.
On Monday, we'll be sharing all of our learning. It will take quite a while!
Next week's Mouse Mania is fruit kebabs.
Have a wonderful weekend!
