Reception - Arrrrr! There be pirates.

Date: 1st Oct 2017 @ 2:03pm

This week in Reception we introduced different themed enhancements to the class, which were developed from the pirate play that was happening last week.  These enhancements are added to the environment to 'enhance' learning during continuous provision.  The response by the class was fantastic and there was lots of fabulous learning going on.

We've had children developing their number recognition and counting skills, creating various pirate themed props to support their role play, developing their fine motor skills and continuing to develop relationships with other children in the class.

As part of our literacy learning, we have been using the book, 'Ten little pirates' and we have loved it!  We have had children creating their own treasure maps and writing messages in a bottle in response to the text.  We have also had lots of discussions about the images in the text and used it to help develop our phonic skills, and help us to identify initial sounds in different words.  We played 'I spy' with a page in the  book and it would be great if you could play this at home too, using any image from a book that you like.  Have a go at orally segmenting some simple words too, e.g. h-a-t, hat, and support your child to be able to hear the words that you are splitting up into sounds.

This week we have also been finding out that there are lots of different languages spoken all over the world and thought about the different languages that some children and adults speak that go to our school.  We learned to say 'Hello', in different languages and then focused on learning about France.  We learned some French songs and found out a little bit about the culture.  Making French baguettes was definitely a highlight of the week and we enjoyed eating it for snack the next day!  We will be continuing with learning some basic French over the year.

We finished the week with our Mouse Mania and enjoyed having our buddies in the classroom with us.  Next week Mouse Mania will be a pyjama party. Please bring PJs in a bag on Friday and a treat.

We hope that you've had a lovely weekend,

Mrs Jobber and Miss Partington
