Team 5: w/b 28.11.16

Date: 4th Dec 2016 @ 2:02pm

This week we have completed our learning on multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100 and 1000 in maths. This is an important mental maths skill that everyone in team 5 should continue practising and is something we will continue to revisit throughout the year in our mental maths warm ups.

In English this week, we have focussed on punctuation and grammar, identifying sentences with parenthesis, and the punctuation that can be used to show this.  Parenthesis is extra information or explanation within a sentence that if removed, would leave the sentence grammatically correct.  Parenthesis is often shown with brackets, dashes or contained within 2 commas. Our next step will be to try and use sentences with parenthesis in our Christmas books.

Everyone is Key Stage 2 have been working so hard to perfect the Christmas performance and it is set to be a truly magical show; make sure you come along to see them next week if you can!

Towards the end of the week, in Guided Reading we focused upon the skill of summarising either a story or a sequence of several paragraphs. I was impressed with the children's ability to recount key details. We also further practised our spellings, this time placing focus spellings into given sentences in order to gain understanding of word meaning.

In Mathematics we moved onto using rounding to find estimates and to determine accuracy. The children we able to apply their knowledge of rounding from earlier in the year and use this knowledge to problem solve.

We also finished planning our Science experiment (Which material is the most absorbent?) and on Friday carried out the experiment. The results were interesting, and generated a great discussion around which materials are absorbent and what properties an absorbent material has.

Hope you are all enjoying your weekend, ready for learning tomorrow!
